Tsushima is one of the most unique and amazing islands in Japan. We have mouthwatering local delicacies, beautiful scenery, and best of all, friendly, welcoming people. Living in Tsushima really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
Almost 70km long, Tsushima stretches from Izuhara in the south, Toyotama in the center, and Kamitsushima in the far north. Just 70 minutes by ferry from Busan, visits to Korea are easy and cheap, and transport is also available to both Fukuoka and Nagasaki by ferry, jetfoil, and plane. Tsushima really is the best of both worlds – we have both beautiful beaches and lush green mountains. Swimming, hiking, sea kayaking, fishing, and horse riding are all on offer.
Click here to visit Tsushima’s local area website for more information on events, tourism, and city specific rules and practices on topics such as disaster prevention and evacuation etc.
Tsushima is also home to some very unique cuisine and incredibly fresh seafood. Locally-caught abalone and turban shells are second-to-none, and the seasonal sashimi is hard to beat. Local specialties include Tonchan, flame-roasted pork in a traditional sauce, as well as Taishu Soba and Rokube, noodles with a very unique texture.
There are seven ALTs here on Tsushima, and although we may be a little spread out, there are plenty of opportunities for us to get together, and countless events and festivals to enjoy.
Below are some stunning photographs of Tsushima, courtesy of one of our amazing ALTs Stefan Jenkins.
