Altopedia

Altopedia is an excellent resource for topic-related games and teaching ideas. It is aimed at English for elementary school and junior high school, but also includes information for high school as well as material not covered in textbooks (i.e. holidays and phonics). The site is very easy to navigate as many game and worksheet materials are linked to specific categories out of the English textbooks presently used in Japan. Explanations of materials have also been translated into Japanese. ALTopedia is the reincarnation of Englipedia.org, now gone forever (from the internet, but not from our hearts).

Here you can find many sources related to ESL. ESL Cafe’s “Idea Cookbook” table of contents contains a variety of game ideas arranged by type: from business English to listening, using music in the classroom, and grammar-oriented activities. Very helpful for both the classroom and English Conversation classes (英会話). Teacher forums can also be found on the site to allow teachers to swap ideas or ask others for advice.

EducationUSA, a program run by the State Department, is a helpful resource for students who are interested in studying in the US. It aims to promote US higher education around the world, covering the necessary steps to study in undergraduate, graduate, and intensive English programs. This includes advice on choosing the right universities to apply to, application procedures, test prep, financial information, and visa procedures.In addition to the website, EducationUSA also has advising centers in Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo and Fukuoka, if your students live near any of these cities. This is a very useful tool to get those students interested in studying abroad on the right track to actually doing it!
