Nagasaki has a rich, long history that is steeped in tradition. It has been a point of commerce in Japan for over four centuries now, primarily trading with China, Holland and Portugal. Influences from those cultures can be seen throughout the city, from the architecture to the food.

Nagasaki is a small enough city to keep from being overwhelming but is also large enough to have the creature comforts of an urban center such as movie theaters, gyms and a variety of traditional and internationally-inspired eateries.

For those of you who want to immerse yourself in Japanese culture there are many avenues available. Some of our current JET’s are involved in martial arts, calligraphy, flower arranging and peiron dragon boating to name a few. There are many opportunities to volunteer within the local community and make plenty of new friends. If there is something you would like to try, please do not be afraid to ask the people around you for advice.
