Creating Barrier-Free Language Classrooms

Alexandra Burke is an expert in classroom accommodation for disabilities and neurodiversity issues and has extensive experience presenting and speaking about these topics both within Japan and at international conferences. A former JET program participant and direct hire ALT with experience teaching in kindergarten through to high school she now teaches at universities. Burke has been published multiple times for her research into neurodiversity in classrooms and how adjustments to materials can ‘unlock’ neurodiverse students. She is a three time winner of a Best of JALT Award (Japan Association for Language Teaching). Her knowledge of neurodiversity is of particular relevance now since the Reading Barrier Free Legislation (2019) and Global Innovation Gateway School system (one student, one device) has been enacted in Japan.Â
