Dearest Assistant Language Teachers of Nagasaki,

How are those winter plans coming along? We hope you have some fun stuff cooking up! We have a few things for you this month, mostly reminders.

But first, just a wee note to let you know that Renae and Will are gonna have their own winter getaways over the holiday period. Please be patient if you contact us during that time and we can’t get back to you right away. Remember to seek support from your sempai and COs if you run into any issues over the break.

Winter Break

The end of the year holidays are almost upon us! We know that many of you have planned some much deserved travels, but for those of you that haven’t- get on it! Remember to keep your Contracting Organization in the loop about where you’re going and how they can reach you should there be an emergency. Please also tell your friendly, neighborhood Area Rep in case we have to do the EAP or anything.

Winter Tips and SAD
(Seasonal Affective Disorder)

If you have been feeling a bit low and flat recently, it could be more than the odd dark day getting you down, it could be SAD. As we get into the shorter, colder, darker days it is time to think about initiating some habits that will help those of you who are not fans of winter. Here are some tips for getting you through the winter to spring:

  • Get out and about as much as you can
  • Eat well – it is perfect shabu shabu season
  • Avoid over-indulging in alcohol

The deadline to accept or decline reappointment is approaching quickly! Start taking time soon to consult with friends, family, and yourself about whether or not you would like to stay on the programme past this coming August. Every year in the spring we get emails from ALTs who want to switch their decision about accepting reappointment. Save yourself a lot of stress and possibly heartbreak by thinking carefully over the next month and a half about what you would like to do. If you put it off and make the decision at the last minute, you may regret it.

2018-19 Working Committee

Start thinking about whether you would be interested in helping the ALT community by becoming a Working Committee Member next year. This is a good option for those who wish to contribute to the SDC, but are not confident public speakers. We will open the applications up early next year so keep an eye out for that.

Thanks for a great 2017! We hope your 2018 is even better! Happy holidays!
